Day 32 — Stake

You will be glad to know I am feeling a lot better after yesterdays review — chats with a couple of friends, peers and some stern self talk last night have helped me put it into perspective. Makers tells you to judge everything as a learning experience and if I had passed yesterday with ease my learning would have been minimal. This is the first of many external reviews and this is my first stake in the ground.

This morning the Dream Team were eager to hear how it went — Pete and I compared our war wounds and prepped the guys for their first one. I also went ahead and booked my second, same time, same place a week later. I think it is important to get back on the horse as quickly as possible.

Some other feedback from the reviewer was about my Ruby knowledge — where I have been learning JavaScript, Ruby has quite literally fallen out of my brain. So I have been setting up a daily reminder to try one small task a day in Ruby to try and keep my knowledge ticking over.

The rest of my morning was spent proving a point to myself — completing the task I was set yesterday. Although I knew I was able to do it, I had a niggling thought that I couldn’t. It didn’t take me long but there were a few more speed bumps along the way that I navigated much more eloquently than yesterday.

This afternoon it was time for group project day 2. We have been tasked with making a single page app to create and view notes, the challenge here is doing all of it in Vanilla JavaScript. JavaScript has multiple short cut libraries so it can do some incredible things but our goal is to not use any of them.

This should significantly increase our knowledge of JavaScript. The other issue with using no libraries is we cannot use any ready made testing libraries, so we have to create one ourself.

None of my group have had any prior experience in JavaScript so we have decided to tackle this together but split up to focus on different learnings every morning. This project isn’t significantly hard if we get the learning right.

Software and Soca

Now I have control of my mind, I am back to my high energy self. Today also would have been Carnival Tuesday in Trinidad so here is the King of Soca Machel with his newest release High Life!
